Adding a Second Rig to Your Pressure Washing Business
The second rig is one of the biggest steps a pressure washing business takes. It doubles what the company can wash in a day, but it also brings a payment, a washer to pay, a second set of things to break and a schedule that no longer fits in the owner's head. Done at the right time with a clear job for it, a second rig is how a business grows. Done too early, it is a very expensive way to sit in the driveway.
Signs You Are Ready
If you read Winter Work for a Pressure Washing Business: Roofs, Commercial Routes and the Slow Months, you know the slow season is the best time to plan this. Look back at the last busy season and ask:
- Were you turning work away, or booking further out than customers would wait, for weeks at a time?
- Did recurring commercial stops slip because the residential schedule was full?
- Are your prices already where they should be? Raising prices is cheaper than adding a rig.
- Do you have enough cash to carry the rig through a slow first month or two?
One great month is not a sign. A season of saying no is.
Give the Second Rig a Clear Job
The most common mistake is buying a second rig and just splitting the existing work in half. That makes it hard to tell whether the rig pays off, and both rigs end up driving across each other's routes.
Give it a defined job instead. The usual setup is one rig on residential and one on a commercial route: storefronts, drive-thrus and dumpster pads washed early in the morning or after close, while the residential rig works house washes and driveways in daylight. Other owners split by area, with each rig taking one side of town. Either way, you can see what each rig brings in and costs.
Who Runs It
A second rig needs a second operator, and that person matters more than the equipment. You have two choices: you run the new rig and a trained washer runs the old one, or a washer runs the new one on their own. Often the owner takes the commercial route at first, because it is easier to learn and the stops repeat, then hands it off once a washer knows it.
Hiring and training get their own guides, starting with Hiring Washers for a Pressure Washing Business: Who to Look For and Where to Find Them. The short version: hire for reliability, train on real jobs, and write down how your company does things.
Routing Two Rigs
With one rig, the schedule can live on a calendar. With two, you need to see both rigs' days side by side. In PressureWashingBossPro, the dispatch board shows jobs by day and filters by rig. Each rig can be auto-routed Closest First or Furthest First from the shop, then adjusted by hand. Saved views let you flip between the residential and commercial boards quickly, and route sheets print for anyone who wants paper.
Each washer logs in to the crew app with the company login and a personal PIN and sees only their own jobs in route order. Crew GPS shows on the office map, so you know where both rigs are without calling.
Keep the Information on the Job
With one rig, you are the only one who needs to know the spigot is behind the AC unit. With two, the other washer needs to know it too. Put job details and access notes on every address: surfaces, square feet, stories, siding, method, gate codes, dogs, plants to cover and cars to move. They show on every card in the crew app.
Before-and-after photos taken in the app stay with the job, so you can check quality on the second rig without driving to every address. Customers get the same on-the-way and arrived texts no matter which rig shows up.
Check Whether It Pays
After the first couple of months, look at what the second rig brought in against what it cost: payment, fuel, chemicals, wages and repairs. If you gave it a defined job, this is easy to see. If it is not covering its costs yet, look at the route density, the prices and the number of stops per day before deciding it was a mistake.
A second rig changes the owner's job too, from washing all day to splitting time between washing, quoting, checking quality and running the office. For the rest of the owner's guides on growing, visit the pressure washing business software page.
